Karolina Noszczyk came all the way from Katowice, Poland, to the United States to combine studying, traveling, and playing volleyball. “Volleyball means everything to me. It is my passion and gave me a lot of opportunities,” said Noszczyk, a Journalism and Public Relations major.
To show her personal “American way of life,” Noszczyk created her own YouTube channel called “The Amerykanka,” which is the Polish translation of “The American girl.”
“I created my YouTube channel to show my mom how I live in America,” said Noszczyk. “First, I wanted to speak Polish to help other kids getting scholarship offers in America. Going to America with a scholarship is not very popular in Poland, so we do not really have YouTubers or information about how to get scholarships, contact coaches, or pass all the exams.”
She wants her videos to be helpful for other people who are looking for more information about the life of an international student and student-athlete because she was in a similar situation trying to find the right answers. Now, her channel shows a variety of videos including vlogs of her everyday life, travel vlogs, and tutorials.
“I have big plans connected to my channel. I want to improve my channel by getting better in editing, filming, but also by improving my speech and pronunciation,” said Noszczyk.
Before YouTube, her biggest passion was playing volleyball. “I love spending time getting better, practicing, and of course, playing volleyball,” said Noszczyk. “I think that it means so much to me because my entire life is connected to it. My friends always are my teammates and I know most of the people as well as the greatest people because of volleyball.”
At the age of 13, she decided to go to a sports school because of her interest in playing a sport. “It is something in which I can express myself. I can be a leader and the person I truly am which means that I am really loud and supportive,” said Noszczyk.
Becoming a professional volleyball player has always been her dream. However, after being on the national team in Poland and graduating high school, Noszczyk changed her mind and wanted to use her potential to study and pursue a college degree. After studying at Missouri State University West Plains and at Western Texas College for her first two years of college, she signed her scholarship papers with the Madonna University Crusaders.
“I am very happy about being at Madonna and I am looking forward to graduating with my Journalism major,” said Noszczyk. “For me, moving to the United States was a very good decision because it gave me the opportunity to find myself.”
People here know her as a very outgoing and passionate person. One of them is the women’s volleyball head coach Jerome Abraham: “We have always strived and been fortunate to bring in quality international student-athletes. To me, it is a great opportunity to share with our athletes, a unique cultural experience. Bringing players from different countries with different backgrounds creates an even more rewarding experience for the team. We currently have players from Canada, Germany, Australia, and Poland. Karolina is enjoying her opportunity and has established herself immediately as a leader amongst our team and will continue to be an asset to the Madonna community.”
She believes that moving to the United States made her stronger and she thinks that she can have more opportunities here than back in Poland. “Here, you can always improve yourself and I feel like you get more rewarded for your hard work because there are more job opportunities in America,” said Noszczyk.
“College is a good time to realize what you really want to do in life. After changing my major for like four times, I think Journalism is the path I want to follow. I would love to be a reporter or interviewer because I see myself communicating with people. However, I hope that volleyball and YouTube will always be a big part of my life,” said Noszczyk.
