The new tutoring program is completely free and only needs an appointment for the one-on-one tutoring session. An additional drop-in service allows quick questions or the clarification of assignments.
“I am sure that I will use this service for questions that come up while I am doing my homework because I can get help right away,” says sophomore Ian Billock.
Madonna expanded this drop-in service to allow more subjects and hours of availability. The Center for Personalized Instruction (CPI) is open from Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“If you plan ahead you can schedule your appointment for possibly difficult assignments on the day they offer that class,” states Billock.
As of right now, the tutoring center offers help in biology, chemistry, history, math, nursing, psychology, religion, sign language, and sociology classes.
“Especially as an international student it can be a great help to understand the tasks and readings, but also avoid grammar or spelling mistakes afterwards,” says freshman Caio Nogueira.
Even though the writing center can help with improvements in writing, CPI helps with the understanding portion. They also offer small group study lessons that are led by a student and regularly review the content of select courses.
“This would be my 'go-to' if I did not understand the content of my last class,” says Billock.
The CPI tutors are specially trained to help students master their course content while improving study skills at the same time. They also run workshops that focus on the intellectual and personal growth of students.
The workshops include a range of topics including academic skill building, time management, career exploration, graduate school preparation, and study abroad exploration.
To schedule an appointment students can log into MyPortal. After a click on the Students tab, the student can open Student Resources. A link will be available to open the TutorTrac website. To log in, the student needs to use his or her Madonna email address and student ID as the password.
After the login, the student has to choose the CPI center and then the class that is needed for the tutoring as well as the reason which would be Tutoring one-on-one.
“It seems a little bit complicated, but with the instructions and after scheduling an appointment the first time, it is very easy to do it again,” says Nogueira.
