The Madonna University faculty and administration selected Sarah Knapp to receive the St. Catherine Undergraduate Award for 2016-17.

This award is presented to students who exemplify the Catholic college student’s high morals and standards. Along with that, they must earn a minimum 3.25 grade point average. The award is in memory of Catherine Alexandria, who was a scholar and loved to help in her community.

Knapp was chosen by the faculty because of her outstanding volunteer work on campus. She worked with faculty and staff to create the Biological and Health Sciences club, tutors in natural sciences, and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. However, she not only has helped in the classroom, but also in the community. She coached a Livonia U14 softball team, helped in the Emergency Medicine Research Associates program at St. Mary’s Hospital, and did volunteer work for a youth group at St. Damian Catholic Church.

Knapp talked about how much the award meant to her and how she was grateful to be chosen.

“When I first heard that they chose me, I couldn’t actually believe it,” she happily said. “I was honored to be recognized for this award. Honestly, I don’t even think about what effect my actions have on the community. I just do whatever I think is right. It’s an awesome feeling to have your hard work recognized though.”

Her parents, Steve and Patty Knapp, were extremely proud of her accomplishments as well.

“To see your kid making so many steps in the right direction and helping out in the community, it’s really breathtaking,” Steve said. “I know the old cliché of your parents being proud of her no matter what, but she truly outdid herself. We are unbelievably proud.”

Patty Knapp was equally as excited for her daughter to be receiving this award.

“She is so hard-working, determined, and always willing to help,” Patty complimented. “Even if she didn’t win the award, she would have deserved it in my book. There aren’t a lot of people who can go accomplish whatever they set their minds to, but she is certainly up to the challenge.”

Knapp is a biology and pre-medicine major at Madonna and holds a 3.95 GPA. She is currently applying to medical schools but has yet to decide on what one she is going to.
