A year after losing former senior and top golfer, Karen Zambrano to graduation, the Madonna Crusaders Women’s Golf team headed into its fall season with solid expectations, as they had a strong class of incoming freshmen recruits.
Zambrano's graduation left an opening for someone to step up and take the lead role. Enter Madison Montgomery, a junior from Byron, Michigan. Montgomery spent her freshman and sophomore seasons improving and learning from her mistakes and looking up to Zambrano. Entering her junior season, it was her time to shine.
The Crusaders have both a fall and a spring season, that are split into two, as the weather in the winter months is not ideal for golf in Michigan. As the fall season just recently came to a close, the news broke that Montgomery was awarded with All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, second-team honors. Montgomery put it all on the course in the final fall event of the season, as she finished 8th - 166 (79-87), with a first-round of 79, which was a season-low and she finished the 10-round fall slate with an 83.7 average. This performance helped lead her team to a third-place finish at the third WHAC Jamboree hosted by Lawrence Technological University at Northville Hills Golf Club. Also, earlier in the season, Montgomery helped lead the Crusaders to a second-place finish at the UNOH Fall Invitational.
“Being named second team all-conference was so satisfying. I have put in a lot of time, so it was nice to finally see the hard work pay off. Golf is very humbling, which makes honors like these that much more meaningful. I will forever be grateful for the support I received from my team and coach this season, which allowed me to perform on the course,” said Montgomery.
Not only did Montgomery’s performance this fall season lead her to her first All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, second-team honor, but it also led her to her first Crusader of the Week nomination.
The team as a whole had a solid fall season. Just like any team, there were tournaments where they struggled, but there were also tournaments where they performed very well. However, Montgomery gave it her all personally each and every time she hit the course.
“This season, like every other season, had its ups and downs. As a team we made so much progress off the course and I think we are closer than ever before. All of us put in a substantial amount of time this season improving our own games and pushing each other to be the best players we can be. We finished 3rd in the WHAC this fall, so we are looking forward to redemption this spring at the WHAC championship. Individually, I had my lowest average scoring season, but I am excited for what is next because I know there is room for improvement,” said Montgomery.
As mentioned, Montgomery and the team have just wrapped up the fall season, but this offseason, they will be hard at work, making improvements before the spring season arrives. Ending the fall on a high note, Montgomery will look to build on her strong fall season, when the spring season arrives.
“Our team has an extremely talented roster from top to bottom, so we are looking to make big moves in the WHAC. This spring season we hope to prove ourselves at the WHAC championship. This offseason, we will be putting in lots of work to improve our golf games and make a statement in the conference this coming spring,” said Montgomery.
